Staff Tasting Notes

Nose – What hits you upon first nosing is the pronounced juicy character; almost rum like in its juiciness and reminiscent of oloroso sherry (surpise!), rum soaked raisins and marmalade, raspberry. More choux pastry, nut and cream like aromas develop over time; there’s a praline flavoured creaminess reminding us of Paris-Brest with almonds and walnuts. A toasted malt loaf note briefly makes and appearance and we could also detect a hint of damp earth and leaf mulch. With water the nose becomes much lighter and vibrant with pear drops, pineapple and baked apple with brown sugar alongside condensed milk and Cadburys Fruit and Nut.

Palate – Rich, deep flavours of juicy rum soaked raisins, medjool dates, almond paste and moscovado sugar. With water, just like with the nose it there’s’ a much more vibrant, lighter character coming through with, toffee apples, pear drops again and milk chocolate. The palate also gets a lot more oaky but this doesn’t throw the balance off at all.

Finish – Salted caramel with a very subtle saltiness. Echoes of muscovado sugar and fresh green apples, pear drops and blueberry flavoured Jelly Beans. A nice long and measured dryness that lingers long.

Comments – A well balanced whisky that manages to show a deep, rich, sherry cask character without the oak dominating everything while simultaneously allowing some of the lighter vibrant and fresh notes to still come through.
